Spotting a Narcissist

OTTAWA, ON – June 22, 2017

Cathy Lumsden, Rhapsody Strategies, Business Coach, Counsellor, Life CoachOttawa Family Living
By Cathy Lumsden

Are you working or living with a narcissist?

It might be your boss, your neighbour, or even your spouse. Narcissists are described as challenging, demanding, difficult, self-absorbed and even abusive. Throughout your lifespan you will most likely run across someone who fits this profile.

How do you know if you’re dealing with a narcissist? Initially you may not know, as narcissists can be charming, bright, considerate and interesting. As time goes on, though, you may feel emotionally drained, angry, frustrated, helpless, anxious and stuck. The feeling of walking on eggshells often occurs; sometimes you may feel as though they are throwing egg at you! Some of you may experience PTSD (post- traumatic stress disorder) if you co-exist with one of these individuals day in and day out for a longer period of time.

Room for rent: Intermediaries are helping small firms cash in on unused space

TORONTO, ON – January 4, 2016

Rhapsody Strategies, 18 Byward Market Square Ottawa Ontario K1N 7A1Rhapsody Strategies, a branding and business consultancy in the heart of Ottawa’s ByWard Market, offers a training centre through This Space Works, that takes up roughly one-fifth of its 5,000-square-foot office for $60 an hour, or $500 a day. It includes free Wi-Fi, a big screen TV, flip charts, walls painted with white board paint, drop-down video backdrops, lighting equipment, and a full kitchen. It is also sealed off from the firm’s staff with a barn-style sliding door.

When Rhapsody designed the space, president and CEO Trefor Munn-Venn realized the company wouldn’t need it every day. Beyond the financial benefit that comes with leveraging an “unused asset,” he said it’s also opening the door to prospective clients. Since it was made available last spring, Rhapsody has rented it out to government departments, large brands and IT companies looking to work away from their own offices.

Social media specialists hope for better government communications under Liberals

OTTAWA, ON – October 28, 2015

Social Media, Rhapsody Strategies, Trefor Munn-Venn, CBC, CBC News, CBC Ottawa, Social Media OttawaAttendees of a conference on social media in the public sector say they hope the incoming Liberal government will loosen restrictions federal departments face when using Twitter and Facebook to communicate with the public.

“Some departments here have six levels of approval for a tweet, where a tweet is supposed to be spontaneous,” said Chantal Bechervaise, who works in the Privy Council Office and moonlights as a social media marketing consultant with her company Take It Personel-ly.

“Now it’s getting people to relax and be comfortable with expressing themselves … just being able to be themselves and take their own personalities and infuse that in what they do. … I think that [prime minister-designate] Justin Trudeau seems to be very open to using social media … It’s an untapped resource that the public sector is not using and they’re kind of last to react on things, so it’s a way to bring them on board.”

Why Your New Year’s Business Resolutions Aren’t Going to Work

OTTAWA, ON – October 28, 2014

Did 2014 turn out the way you expected? Think about the promises you made to yourself . . . to your business. Like so many, you may have started the New Year with the best of intentions, but somehow, bit by bit, you slipped back into your old habits, only for those broken resolutions to end up painful reminders of what you failed to achieve.

The reason most planning fails is because it doesn’t tap into something deep enough. On December 4, 2014, Rhapsody Strategies will launch the first program in their new Accelerator Series; the 2015 Impact Accelerator. The 2015 Impact Accelerator is not your average goal setting seminar, but a day spent with other game-changing business leaders and entrepreneurs who want to write their epic story in the New Year.

Tats find place in working life

The Canadian Press – October 8, 2014

Rob Dale, Rhapsody Strategies, Business Coach, OttawaTORONTO — When Rob Dale decided to wear a short-sleeved dress shirt on a warm fall day, his choice of clothing didn’t cross his mind until he arrived at a business breakfast event — and then he suddenly felt uncomfortable.

“I was conscious of the fact that my arms were covered in tattoos,” recalled the Ottawa-based Dale. “You didn’t see any other tattoos. Most people were in some form of semi-casual business attire.

Dale had recently finished training to become a business coach and was attending a monthly breakfast hosted by the Orleans Chamber of Commerce.

“I was a new face in a room of about 80 owners. … With all of these tattoos, (I) felt quite like I was standing out.”

As it turns out, Dale’s inked arms were a point of interest for a tattooed gym owner attending the event, with whom he booked a meeting.

“He said: ‘Well, actually, to be honest with you, the reason I decided to sit down with you is because I saw the tattoos and I knew you wouldn’t be the normal, kind of cliched business coach. I knew that there would be something unique about you.’ And so in his case, it opened that door to having that conversation about coaching and all of that.”
